One of the most important aspects of painting is learning how to recognize and use values in your painting. As the ol saying goes, values do the work, color gets the credit. Simply download the pdf and print it out. Cardstock is best but regular paper will work also. Cut out the scale and use a small hole punch to punch a hole in each of the 10 levels.
Use your value scale over a photo to match the values, or hold your value finder up to the subject if you are painting from life. You’ve matched it to the correct value when the object seems to blend in with the value. It’s also great for comparing values.
